While hunting, a man was chased from the woods when an ape-like thing, standing over 9 foot tall, covered in red hair, began to throw rocks at him. 

October 2002, Cowans Gap: 
A couple out hiking in Cowans Gap State Park, sees deer flee after hearing loud ape-like sounds. The wife then observes the dark colored hind-quarters of a creature, before it fled up the mountain.
